Shawarma is a popular Middle Eastern dish that consists of meat cooked on a spit and shaved off in thin slices. It is usually served in a pita bread wrap with various vegetables and sauces. Here is a recipe for chicken shawarma that you can make at home.
Ingredients:
For the Chicken:
- 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons paprika
- 2 teaspoons cumin
- 1 teaspoon coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Shawarma Wrap:
- 4 pita breads
- 1 cup chopped lettuce.
- 1 cup chopped tomatoes.
- 1 cup chopped cucumbers.
- 1/2 cup chopped red onion.
- Tzatziki sauce or hummus for serving.
Instructions:
Cut the chicken breasts into thin, 1/4-inch slices. In a large bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, paprika, cumin, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Add the chicken slices to the bowl and toss to coat evenly with the marinade. Cover the bowl and let the chicken marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight.
Preheat a grill to medium-high heat. Thread the chicken slices onto skewers and grill for 6-8 minutes on each side, or until the chicken is cooked through and slightly charred. Remove the chicken from the skewers and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing it into thin strips.
To assemble the shawarma wraps, warm the pita breads in the microwave or oven. Fill each pita with a generous amount of the chopped lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onion. Top the vegetables with the sliced chicken and drizzle with tzatziki sauce or hummus.
Fold the pita bread over the fillings and wrap it in foil or parchment paper to hold it together. Serve the shawarma wraps immediately.
This recipe yields four shawarma wraps, but you can easily adjust the quantities of the ingredients to make more or fewer wraps. You can also add or substitute other vegetables, such as shredded carrots or bell peppers, and adjust the seasoning to your taste. Making homemade shawarma is a great way to enjoy this delicious Middle Eastern dish at home, and this recipe is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
